Funcom, the developer behind Dune: Awakening, has admitted that getting the game ready for Microsoft's lower-powered Xbox Series S will be a “challenge.”
Talking to Connor Makar from VG247Dune: Awakening product manager Scott Junior said that “there are a lot of optimizations we need to make before we ship on Xbox.” He noted that this is “one of the reasons we're going to ship on PC first.”
As revealed last month, Dune: Awakening is set to debut on PC early next year, however, console versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S still don't have a release date locked in. But, if you're interested in checking out Dune: Awakening on your Series S, don't worry just yet. Later in the conversation, Junior said that the Dune: Awakening team “might be able to do it,” and work was progressing.
Funcom isn't the only developer to admit that the Series S added an extra layer of challenge during development. Baldur's Gate 3 was released several months late on Xbox due to difficulties with split-screen co-op on the less powerful Series S console.
Most recently, former Naughty Dog and Rocksteady developer From the Walker He said he wished “the Series S had never existed,” and called the console “annoying to optimize” (though he didn't specify any games in this post).
As for Dune: Awakening, our Deputy Editor Chris Tapsell got his hands-on with the survival MMO earlier this year, when he also spoke with Funcom's creative director and the game's creative director, Joel Bylos.
Funcom then went on to specifically explain how Dune: Awakening will address religion, following concerns from the Dune community.
