Kate Winslet He hates to burst everyone's bubble, but that iconic door scene in Titanic It wasn't as scary to film as fans assumed it was.
In a new interview in the podcast “Happy Sad Confused” Winslet, 48, who played Rose DeWitt Bukater in the 1997 smash hit, revealed that she and her co-star leonardo di caprio He filmed the door scene in “waist-deep” water.
“Well, that was a pretty awkward tank,” Winslet told the host. Josh Horowitz. “To burst a bubble, that tank came up to my waist. So, first of all, I would regularly say, 'Ugh, can I go pee?' and then I would get up, walk out the door, walk to the edge of the tank which was about 20 feet away, and I would literally have to throw my leg out and get out of the tank and go pee and then come back and crawl out the door again.” .
Winslet then shared that DiCaprio, 49, was kneeling the entire time she filmed her (spoiler alert) death scene, which has been hotly debated over the years.
“It's terrible to admit these things… I'm afraid Leo is kneeling at the bottom of the tank,” he revealed. “I shouldn't say any of these things. [Director] James CameronHe'll call me like, 'Why are you telling them all that?'”
Winslet continued: “The amazing thing about the edges of the tank was that it was an infinite tank, so there was water constantly running and you could hear the constant sound of the water.”
Apparently, the sound of moving water was so powerful that Winslet said dialogue from the last 20 minutes of the film was re-recorded in a studio, including Rose yelling, “Jack! Jacob!”
A quick review (more spoilers): DiCaprio's character, Jack Dawson, dies after remaining submerged in the icy waters for hours after the sinking of the Titanic. His hand ends up frozen over Rose's as she floats safely over a gate in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean before being discovered by a lifeboat.
Over the years, many have wondered if Jack could have fit in the door next to Rose, ultimately giving fans the happy ending they craved.
During the press tour of Once upon a time… in Hollywood In 2019, DiCaprio declared “no comment” when they asked his opinion. His co-stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbiehowever, he believed Rose could have made some room.
“I don't know,” Winslet said when asked about her own view of the controversial scene in a previous interview with Horowitz in 2022. “Look, all I can tell you is that I have a decent knowledge of water. and how it behaves. If you put two adults on a paddle board, it immediately becomes extremely unstable. That's for sure.”
Winslet added: “I have to be honest: I actually don't think we would have survived if we both had gotten to that door. I think it would have fit, but it would have tilted and it wouldn't have been a sustainable idea.”
She concluded: “Yes, it could have fit in that door. But it wouldn't have stayed afloat. “I wouldn't do it.”
Filmmaker Cameron put an end to speculation in 2023 National Geographic special Titanic: 25 years later with James Cameron when he worked with a team of scientists to recreate the scene and test four different scenarios in which Jack actually went up to the door.
In the end, he learned that it would have been difficult for Jack to survive even if he had joined Rose in the rubble.
“I think her thought process was, 'I'm not going to do anything to put her in danger,' and that's 100 percent typical of her character,” the director concluded.
