Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will apparently delve deeper into the series' mythology, and one of the recently returning cast members teased an “intriguing” scenario, plus characters including “old favorites” and “really deep cuts,” and if That doesn't include Birdo, I'll riot.
Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, the sequel to last year's smash hit (and embarrassingly Birdo-less) animated film, is still a ways off from its planned 2026 release, but that hasn't stopped Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key scoffed. something of what is to come.
“One thing I can say about the second movie is that it's a little bit broader in scope and a very intriguing story and Mario's world unfolds,” Key said. told Men's Journal (thank you VGC). “You're going to find some really cool Easter eggs and it's been really exciting so far.”
“[Creatively] They've really expanded the universe that these characters live in,” Key continued, “and we're going to meet new people. “We're going to meet some new people who are old favorites and some people who I think are very deep, but because of the way the story is developing right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”
The original Super Mario Bros. movie, of course, was already positively decked out with Easter eggs (which makes Birdo's omission even more inexcusable), so it's not exactly a revelation to hear that it will continue in the sequel. But the news at least opens the door to some gentle speculation while we wait for more solid news.
Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Princess Daisy, Rosalina, and Bowser Jr. were, for example, notably absent from the first Mario movie (as was Birdo, in case you didn't know), making them strong candidates for the sequel, but I'm not sure I'd call any of that group particularly “deep cuts.” Personally, I'm fine with anything from the western release of Super Mario Bros. 2, whether it's Wart, Phanto, or even a particularly obscure throwback called Birdo.
Super Mario Bros. Move 2 is scheduled to hit US theaters on April 3, 2026. Chris Pratt will reprise his role as the voice of Chris Pratt, alongside characters such as Anya Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach, Charlie Day's Luigi and Jack Black's Bowser. , Keegan-Michael Key's Toad and Seth Rogan's Donkey Kong. And if we are doing a dream casting, Matt Berry as Birdo.
