Netflix officially announced that the production of the long-awaited Peaky Blinders The film has finally begun after more than two years since the original crime drama series concluded its six-season run. The streamer also shared the first photo from the project, giving fans their first look at Cillian Murphy's return as Thomas Shelby.
Who is involved in the Peaky Blinders movie?
Described as an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning gangster saga, the film is directed by Tom Harper from a screenplay written by Steven Knight. More details about its plot remained under wraps. Murphy will be joined by a host of acclaimed new cast members, including Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs). At the moment, it's still unclear if any of the main cast members from the original series will also return for the film.
“I'm excited to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II,” series creator Steven Knight said in a statement (via Tumdu). “The country is at war and of course so are our Peaky Blinders.”
The Peaky Blinders movie is produced by Knight, Murphy, Patrick Holland and Guy Heeley. Executive producers are Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Caryn Mandabach and Andrew Warren. It is a production between Netflix and BBC Film. Last December, it was reported that Netflix was developing two Peaky Blinders spin-offs, the first of which would take place in the mid-20th century and the other would focus on the origins of Helen McCrory's Polly Gray.
