Pure Storage has introduced a new virtual machine (VM) assessment tool aimed at making cost management easier for enterprise users following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware.
The offering, which will be generally available in Q4 fiscal year 2025, will help IT decision makers (ITDMs) monitor performance, plan scenarios, and make right-sizing recommendations through the Pure1 platform.
Optimizing virtual machines will be simplified with the tool, Pure Storage revealed, proving an especially attractive concept in a world where many VMware virtual machines have become difficult to manage under the company's new ownership.
Speaking at a press conference at Pure//Accelerate London 2024, Prakash Darji, general manager of Pure’s digital experience business unit, said the announcement focused on helping customers optimize their VMware licensing spend following the Broadcom acquisition.
“With Broadcom VMware licensing, they did what Oracle did many years ago, where they changed their metric to not just the cores you're using, [but] “What cores could you be using,” Darji said.
Darji believes that customers were “not ready” for this change, which prompted Pure Storage to develop the new tool.
With the platform, the storage vendor aims to offer users “recommendations on how to optimize core licensing within VMware” and help them “decide what to consolidate to save on core density across virtual machines.”
“We could even allow them to model how much it costs them in VMware licenses to put their vCenters on a disk system instead of a flash system,” Darji added, with vCenter being the server management software delivered by VMware.
A turbulent time for VMware customers
Following Broadcom's gigantic project VMware acquisition for $69 billion In 2023, customers were left baffled by how VMware’s business model is changing.
Civo Research Earlier this month it was revealed that more than half (51.9%) of VMware customers are considering leaving the company's services after Broadcom leaders dropped numerous licenses and products.
The trade group Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers in Europe (CISPE) has Attack against Broadcom for the changes, accusing the firm of “holding the sector hostage” by abusing its market share to charge higher prices.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan has He largely shrugged off the reaction. However, it describes the changes as part of a simplification process focused on driving innovation and meeting customer needs more effectively.
In June, VMware introduced its First Cloud Foundation Review from acquisition with the goal of reducing complexity, improving deployment, and enhancing cyber resilience.
