Sony reveals Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima

Sony has revealed Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yôtei, a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, and it's set to release next year.

The game will feature a new ghost protagonist named Atsu and is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yôtei on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan.

The teaser trailer has a bit of a Western feel to it, with lots of guitar music and horseback riding, and of course, it looks impressive.

It looks like Atsu will be joined by a wolf companion, though she appears to be alone for much of the trailer.

Ghost of Tsushima is set in 1274, while Ghost of Yôtei takes place in 1603, so I wasn't expecting the previous Ghost Jin Sakai to appear.

“When we set out to create a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world,” Sucker Punch communications manager Andrew Goldfarb wrote in the PlayStation Blog.

“We also wanted to keep innovating. To create something new yet familiar, we looked beyond the story of Jin Sakai and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost. At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it might mean to have a new hero don a Ghost mask and uncover a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yôtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”

This will also be Sucker Punch's first game built from the ground up for PS5, as Ghost of Tsushima was originally a PS4 release before its Director's Cut. There's still no confirmation that it will be enhanced for PS5 Pro, but as it's a first-party game from Sony, that would certainly be expected.

Ghost of Tsushima was also released for PC, where it was an immediate success as the biggest single-player release for the PlayStation.
