Sony's futuristic controller concept brings back memories of PS3 boomerang

Sony has shared a video detailing the company's future plans for the next decade, including a look at a possible concept for a futuristic PlayStation controller.

“Where will our imagination take us?” the video asks, showing an artist's animated character coming to life before our eyes.

But the controller is the most striking detail in the video, as we see it used to pilot a character through space. The platform features a holographic display that hovers over the controller and would easily look at home on the Starship Enterprise. (Though many online have made unfavorable comparisons to the PS3's infamous boomerang concept.) You can see for yourself in the video below.

“Within 10 years, we will live in a more layered world where physical and virtual realities overlap without limits,” says the official blurb for the video. “If Sony, as a creative entertainment company, filled the world with the new Kando [a Japanese term that roughly translates to ’emotion’] In that future, what kind of experiential value would we offer to make that happen?”

“To explore this question, we carried out a prototyping exercise under the concept of 'Creative Entertainment Vision'. Envisioning through the lens of Sony's creativity and technology, here we present the future as an extension of our lives today”.

Sony, however, states that the content of the video “is not directly related to any existing Sony product or service.” Noted.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Sony had shipped five times as many PlayStation 5 consoles as Microsoft managed with the Xbox Series X/S in the last quarter.

These latest figures mean that Sony has sold more than 59 million PS5 consoles since its market debut. As Tom noted at the time, this is roughly equivalent to PS4 at the same point in its lifecycle.
