Jason Reitman ate something sweet things to say about his time like Saturday night live writer before talking about the making of the film that embodies the chaotic nature of the sketch show's first time on the air. While Bill Murray does not appear in the film since he did not join until season 2, his friend Dan Aykroyd is played by Dylan O'Brienalong with Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, John Belushi and more portrayed in the film. As Reitman continued:
But what stood out to me the most was that he talked about his time on SNL and how important it was to him. It echoed everything I'd heard from everyone else about the importance, not just globally, of Saturday Night Live changing the culture, but also for them individually to be at the center of what you just described. The moment when an atom splits. To me, culturally, that's what SNL is. Defines my sense of humor. It defines my way of seeing the world. The screening was great, the audience was really enthusiastic like I had never experienced before. When Lamorne Morris comes up to sing, 'I'm going to get me a shotgun'… the audience really applauds him. I left the cinema and the first thing I thought about was my dad.
Reitman also shared with the publication that the premiere was a difficult moment for him because he realized that it is the last script his father read and the first film of his that he will never see. Ivan Reitman died at the age of 75 back in 2022, a few months after seeing his son bring back Ghostbusters with 2021 Afterlife.
